Pesticides
Pesticides are substances that are used to exterminate pests. Pesticides can be chemicals, disinfectants, or any other substance used to eliminate the presence of pests, such as insects, molds, fungi, bacteria, rodents, or weeds. Pesticides are a common form of the removal of pests in food. This is a safe practice because it decreases the chance of humans getting sick from diseases caused by pests. However, using pesticides in food is also dangerous because ,if used incorrectly, the chemicals can be very dangerous to humans.

The good side of using pesticides is that they can remove many pests that may be harmful to humans. When used appropriately, pesticides can be very helpful in the removal of pests from foods. The government and the EPA regulate the amount of pesticides that can be put into certain foods. If this safety practice is followed, no harm should come to any one who consumes the food. The EPA also annually checks different pesticides to make sure they are still safe for human consumption and that the correct amounts are still being used.

However, even when used safely, pesticides can still be dangerous to the health of humans. Pesticides are sometimes thought of as a bad choice to remove dangerous pests from foods because the harsh chemicals can cause medical problems in people. Pesticides can leave behind dangerous substances in the food if too much is used or the wrong ones are used. The chemicals in the pesticides can also take away or harm the healthful affects of the foods being eaten. Nutrients may be lost in the process of using pesticides.

My thoughts on using pesticides to remove harmful pests from foods, is that it is a good idea. Yes, the chemicals can be harmful but it is rare when safety practices are used in the process. With the EPA and the government checking regularly on which pesticides are safe to use in foods being consumed by humans, health problems will not often occur. The risk when using pesticides is worth taking because if not then the risk of getting diseases from unprotected foods becomes a problem. That is why I think it is best if pesticides are used in foods.

Heidi,
Your essay was well organized and thought up. You showed good examples of how pesticides can have a negative and positive effect on humans and wildlife. A question that I would like to know is if pesticides could be altered to not affect humans in a negative way such as health problems. To improve your essay a little more, you could relate your topic personally to your readers but all in all, you did a great job!!

I agree with your thought that pesticides are a good idea. They have problems, but overall they are good. One thing I would change is not using the word pesticides so much. Other than that, it was a well organized essay.

Your essay was very good! You can see that you put some time into researching information on pesticides. I agree that it is probably a good idea to use them because if not humans could get very harmful diseases. But it seems either way, if we use them or if we don’t, we could be in some kind of danger no matter what. Great Job on your essay, it really had me thinking!

Thanks for the comments!!! Shannon, I also would like to know if pesticides can be altered to be safer. I don’t really know for sure, but I’m sure that something can be done . If it’s not already being figured out, I think it will be in the near future. I agree that a personal relation to the readers is a good idea. Quinton, after reading your comment I re read my essay again and I did notice that I said pesticides maybe a bit to much! Cheyenne, I completely agree that we do have difficult decisions to make when treating our foods because of the health risks involved no matter what we choose. But I strongly believe that with increasing technology something will come up in the future that will be safe for humans, wildlife, and won’t have any dangerous effects.

Heidi,
What are the health risks involved with using pesticides? What proof do you have of the risks involved?
